After his stint as Coronado City Mayor, Richard Bailey is running for the San Diego City Council District 2 seat. At a recent presser, Bailey was asked about his strategies to combat homelessness.
“I will eliminate homeless people,” began Bailey, “by plugging my ears and covering my eyes.” During his term in Coronado, he boasted zero homelessness due to a plan that was little more than rounding up the unhoused and dropping them off in places like National City.
“Here’s the thing—most people assume that if you can’t see them, they can’t see me,” continued Bailey, “but the truth is, if you can’t see them, they do not exist.”
Bailey, running as an independent, faced criticism from both the left and right for his plan to tackle the homeless. A San Diego GOP spokesperson argued on social media that Bailey’s plan “…does not go far enough. You have to pinch your nose as well.”
