Today Only: The Coronado Bridge is Red for an Amazing Reason

Anyone familiar with San Diego will be familiar with the Coronado Bridge that connects Coronado to the rest of San Diego across the bay. Originally a toll road, the bridge has been free to use since the early 2000s.

Normally, the bridge is blue with natural concrete colored supports. But today, it’s red and for an amazing reason.

SANDAG workers worked through the night to turn the bridge red for today only; at midnight it will close for another eight hours to be restored to its original color.

Last year, a commission approved a plan to build suicide-prevention netting along the bridge, expected to be completed by 2028.
